The Hour’s Disinformation on the CBC

I was just watching The Hour on CBC Newsworld and was happy to see its host, George Stroumboulopoulos, introduce its Disinfo segment. That’s right. Everyone’s favourite mainstream counterculture media darlings are an official part of one of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s most popular hour-long news programmes. (Newsworld is the CBC’s 24-hour news channel here in Canada, but also available in the U.S.)

The Disappeared Collaborative Project

Okay, I’m on vacation?and should be staying away from the computer, but I just saw one of the most disturbing art exhibits I’ve ever seen.?I think it needs more attention than what it’s been getting.

“Los Desaparecidos/The Disappeared is an exhibition of works by 27 artists from seven countries in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Uruguay, and Venezuela) which brings together visual artists’ responses to the tens of thousands of persons who were kidnapped, tortured, killed, and ‘vanished’ in Latin America by repressive right-wing military dictatorships during the late-1950s to the 1980s. The artists in this exhibition approach the phenomenon of ‘disappearance’ from personal perspectives. Their paintings, photographs, sculptures, and videos express individual experiences of the turbulence and chaos that rocked their countries in the mid-decades of the twentieth century.”

One of the “paintings” was an in depth description of the torture methods from a survivor.?From?getting?electrical shocks while having water dripped on them?as they’re hanging by?their arms on hooks; to having the skin on the soles of their feet scraped off;? to?one man having his testicles ripped off slowly with string.?There were?many?scetched pictures?of?faces, and written names?of many of those who?disappeared dealing with these?dictatorships.??

A quantum theory of consciousness that can be taken seriously?

I usually roll my eyes when I read something about quantum theory and consciousness because, as this Telegraph article says:

The use of quantum mechanics this way has been controversial for two reasons: first, this highly mathematical theory is routinely abused by charlatans attempting to explain spooky paranormal phenomena; and, second, scientists cannot even agree on a definition of consciousness, undermining any quest to explain it.

But now, supposedly, someone’s come up with a non-bullshit theory:

Prof Manousakis has now laid out a theory of how a quantum effect could influence image flips in binocular rivalry studies and then, as good science demands, made some predictions.

His predictions are based on the rate that nerve cells fired in the brain. It turns out that the hallucinogenic drug LSD can slow the firing rate of brain cells and, when he factored this effect into his quantum model, he predicted the flip rates would change too.

This is precisely what subjects who took LSD reported in experiments conducted by another group. “My theory simply explains their findings in a simple way,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

Prof Manousakis has now made more predictions that can be tested, based on what happens when subjects glance at the cube from time to time.

This, he believes, could shed light on how our awareness of the passage of time changes, depending on how busy we are, since his theory suggests that when a stimulus such as vision freezes, the perceived time slows to a standstill.

I don’t get it. I suppose I’ll have to either read the paper or find another article on it.

Crack and powdered cocaine sentencing disparity closing

The U.S. Sentencing Commission’s guideline revisions shrinking the penalty gap between crack and cocaine powder took effect last week. (Amendments to the federal sentencing guidelines take effect automatically six months after they’re approved by the commission unless they’re overriden by Congress, which in this case took no action.) As a result of the changes, The Christian Science Monitor reports, “up to 4 in 5 people found guilty of crack-cocaine offenses will get sentences that are, on average, 16 months shorter than they would have been under the former guidelines.” The commission has not decided yet whether to make the changes retroactive. If it does, says the Monitor, “more than 19,500 people now serving time for crack offenses could see their sentences reduced by an average of 27 months.”

Boxing clever in Germany-Chess Anyone?

Okay, one last post before I go out of town. Why not have a friendly round of chess, and then beat your opponent to a bloody pulp? That’s what they’re doing in Germany.

“But just when you would expect the punches to start flying, something rather odd happens. The two challengers put on headphones, sit down at a table and start playing chess: in the middle of the boxing ring. That is because this is Chess Boxing. A sort of Rocky… with rooks. The rules are simple. There is one round of chess – and then one round of boxing. Punching power alternating with brainpower.”

William Blake:What Paintings of Visions Come

A poet and painter, William Blake is considered to be a man who gave back Britain a sense of identity, at a time when the French and American Revolutions were doing the same in those countries. But above all, Blake was a mystic, a visionary, with at least one foot in the Otherworld – if not more.”

Myspace allegedly removing images of runes

odal rune

I have no idea if this is true:

From what I have been able to figure out, the outcry started when a MySpace petition profile (now switched to a closed/private profile) to expand the religious labels for Pagan MySpacers beyond “Wiccan” or “Other” had its profile image removed by administrators due to its “offensive” nature. Since then there have been claims that other Heathen/Asatru profiles also had their runic symbols taken down.

Anyone out there run into problems with this?
