The rumors have been flying all day, but Erowid and MAPS seem to have confirmed the death of Albert Hofmann, the inventor of LSD: “Albert Hofmann passed away at his home at 9am on Tuesday Apr 29, 2008 of a heart attack at the age of 102. He will be missed. [Yes, this is confirmed. It isn’t a rumor — earth]”

(Thanks to Bill for the original tip, and Brenden for the confirmation)

  1. Oh my god! RIP Dr Hoffman. There are people tripping right now, waiting to receive you in larger brighter spaces. 102… nice one. They’ll be talking about that bicycle ride for a long time to come.

  2. Infinite Love to Albert…

  3. Wow, that’s incredible. I don’t even have words.

  4. man. I created a character in one of my comic books who is a patron saint of the chemical wisdom. He will be missed, but his gift to the world will continue to allow us to grasp a better understanding of ourselves, nature, the universe, and all that contrast, conflicts, and coexists.

  5. RIP Albert Hofmann

What a sad day indeed. Maybe it was all the hallucinogens that kept the master wizard alive so long. Such a shame that his “problem child” could not be legal, at least on a medical level, and readily available. I’ve had the pleasure (some 35 years ago) of enjoying the “real deal” and have had a lot of experience with the fakes and wannabes that came after, and I say that while hallucinogenic drugs are not for everyone, they are like an antidepressant to me. When I’m tripping the world is right and my brain functions in such perfect harmony with the way everything “is.” We’ll certainly miss Albert and I hope that the medical world (including Psychology) would figure it out and find all the beautiful things that LSD can help a person be/do/become. RIP Albert….:(

  7. On death, Hofmann said, ?I go back to where I came from, to where I was before I was born, that?s all.?
On April 19th, 1943, Hofmann created the most powerful psychotropic substance: LSD, and experienced the first LSD ?trip?. He was a chemist who valued a drug as a way to understand people?s oneness with nature. For the complete story on ?Bicycle Day?, be sure to watch this amazing documentary Hofmann?s Potion
