Brain Scans Reveal Why Meditation Works

If you name your emotions, you can tame them, according to new research that suggests why meditation works.

Brain scans show that putting negative emotions into words calms the brain’s emotion center. That could explain meditation’s purported emotional benefits, because people who meditate often label their negative emotions in an effort to ‘let them go.’

Psychologists have long believed that people who talk about their feelings have more control over them, but they don’t know why it works.

Swedish Police Shuts Down Pirate Bay – Again

This Friday, it became known that the Swedish Police Board will shut down The Pirate Bay, the popular file sharing site, by classifying it as a child pornography site in the blocklist that Swedish Internet Providers respect. Some time next week, an update to the blacklist will include The Pirate Bay.

This means that anyone from Sweden visiting the well-known file sharing site The Pirate Bay will be greeted by a block page from the Police Board saying they’re not allowed to visit child pornography sites.

Got Khat? One reporters search for the substance in Portland

I wanted khat-and I wanted it now.

So naturally I called a cab. One cab company was recently fined $35,860 because their drivers were working more than 14 hours a day (among other things). It was just a hunch, but with stamina like that, I figured immigrant drivers must prefer some strong, exotic, and drug-test-proof stimulant to be putting in those long hours. And that’s khat.

Abe’s notes on the iPhone

I really wasn’t going to post anything else about the iPhone, at the very least until I use one myself. But Abe’s notes are very good, if you’re at all interested in seeing an critical look at the interface design of this product.

Interesting notes about the non-tactile buttons. One complaint I’ve heard is that you have to look at the keyboard while typing because there are no tactile clues about where the keys are or where your fingers are in relation to them. I could type really quick w/o looking on my old Sidekick. But the touchscreen keyboard would still be an improvement over typing on a numerical keypad.
