Borges on Google Maps

Borges’s story about a map as big as the territory it represented compared to Google Maps:

It is in these days that we are witnessing the collective creation of a map even more exact that Borges could imagine; one that describes the limits, the roads, and the shores of every territory on the planet. At the same time it uncovers another ambition more perfect and occult: that every shepherd or “emperor” can edit their own map as they wish, they can forge their own version of the world. In that map we will have a blueprint of human life: Things moving, crimes, thefts, migrating animals, childhood memories, imaginary battles between good and evil, hookers and ogres, real-time weather. In all, anything that can be pointed down to the soil and be named.

Majority of Icelanders believe in elves

Makes me love Iceland even more… will have to visit there someday.

Polls consistently show that the majority of the population either believes in elves – generally described as humanlike creatures who are fiercely protective of their rocky homes – or is not willing to rule out their existence. But while believing in elves is rooted in Iceland’s culture, it remains a touchy subject.[…]

A belief not just in elves but also in the predictive power of dreams, in the potency of dead spirits and in other supernatural phenomena, is closely linked to Iceland’s Celtic traditions and punishing, powerful landscape – especially the harsh weather and the rocks that appear everywhere.

Biopunk: the Iraq blood black market

IRIN reports:

Iraqis are selling their own blood to people who are buying supplies for relatives in need, due to a shortage, doctors say. This has caused concern over the spread of disease since the supplies are not checked for blood-bourne infections.

Every day hundreds of donors can be seen standing outside the blood bank at the Iraqi National Centre for Blood Donations (INCBD) in the capital, Baghdad.

Women grows penis

IOL reports:

“On the morning of the full moon day of June 21, I noticed my thing (sex organ) was not the same as before,” Thin Sandar, who now goes by the male name Than Sein, said on Wednesday.

“And my breasts disappeared,” Than Sein added. “So I called out and showed it all to my mom and dad. It was very strange.”

Dub Will Tear Us Apart – Jah Division

A dub cover of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart. It’s a pretty groovy little track. There’s also a video of Jah Division performing “Heart and Soul,” but I haven’t watched it yet since I don’t have Real Player. Update: Here’s the video on YouTube:

Think and make poverty history

Meditation expert Matt Clarkson from the UK is conducting an experiment in which Web site visitors will be asked to take part in a meditation to psychically influence leaders of the G-8 summit to make poverty history.

The experiment has been designed to coincide with the G-8 summit being held at Gleneagles where poverty in Africa and the issue of global warming will top the agenda.

Visitors to the Web site will be taken through a 15-minute guided meditation that involves the use of their emotions, their imagination and the focusing of their will and intent to apparently make real changes in the world.
